Providing New Life for Local Hits!
Every June, the Hollywood Fringe Festival lights up Los Angeles with hundreds of bold, original productions. But what happens once the festival ends? For many standout productions, a final performance at the Fringe has often marked the end of their run. While a few shows might secure a one-night encore or attempt a costly tour to another city, most never have the chance to build on their momentum.
It’s not just Fringe shows. The Hobgoblin Playhouse and The Madnani Theater host dozens of excellent shows each year, whether they’re independent productions or part of The StageCrafts’ bi-monthly mini performing arts festivals.
In today’s economic and societal realities, far too many good shows go up once in Hollywood and close before they can gain traction.
That’s where the LA Freeway Circuit comes in.
Inspired by the regional touring circuits of the past, the LA Freeway Circuit takes award-winning independent theatre out of Hollywood and into neighboring communities—far enough away to feel fresh, but close enough to home that artists can still sleep in their own beds each night.
Why the LA Freeway Circuit Matters
Theatre in Los Angeles often struggles with visibility. Artists pour months – sometimes years – into creating a production, only to see it vanish once their run ends. The LA Freeway Circuit changes that by:
- Extending the Run: Award-winning and critically acclaimed productions get more performances beyond their initial production or festival dates.
- Connecting Communities: Audiences outside Hollywood experience shows they might otherwise miss.
- Strengthening LA Theatre: Venues, artists, and audiences all benefit from a sustainable touring ecosystem.
By linking theatres across the city, the Circuit ensures that the momentum of Fringe doesn’t stop at the edge of Hollywood — it keeps moving forward.
“Our goal is to make exciting, high-quality theatre more accessible by bringing it directly into communities throughout Los Angeles,” said Gregory Crafts, co-owner of The StageCrafts and organizer of the Circuit. “We’re committed to showcasing only the best new shows that we can vouch for personally. Every production in our lineup started at our venues, or is a production we’ve personally scouted and invited to join us on the road. More importantly, we make sure each selection stands out in its own unique way.”
The Road Ahead: Touring LA’s Theatre Hubs
Each stop on the Freeway Circuit features a curated lineup of festival favorites — comedies, dramas, solo shows, and everything in between. Audiences from Inglewood to Highland Park, Newhall to North Hollywood will all get the chance to experience the magic.
For artists, it means more performances, more exposure, and more opportunities to connect with new fans. For audiences, it means access to high-quality indie theatre in their own neighborhoods.
Crafts continues: “We’re going to visit a new part of town every other month and bring with us some of the most exciting new works to cross our path. We think it’s our responsibility to uplift excellent work and provide our fellow artists with opportunities to grow their projects and develop their careers. We want to turn LA artists into true local legends.”
